Draft Your Preliminary Thesis Statement

A thesis statement should call your readers' attention to a specific aspect of the conversation you've decided to join. Ideally, your thesis statement should encourage your readers to learn something new, change their attitudes or beliefs, or take a specific action. This activity helps you develop a thesis statement that is well suited to your research writing situation. In your research log, complete the following activity to draft your preliminary thesis statement.

Write your current research question.

Brainstorm or freewrite in response to your research question.
Select the response that best reflects your current understanding of the conversation you have decided to join. If appropriate, combine responses into one preliminary thesis statement.

Write your preliminary thesis statement.

Discussion

Your initial message is due by midnight on Sat., Feb. 23, and two messages responding to classmates' messages by midnight on Tues., Feb. 26.
This week we'll be finding and evaluating online reference works.
Find an online encyclopedia, dictionary, or other type of reference work.
Use the name of the reference work as the subject line of your first message. In your first message, provide a link to the reference work you found, and write a paragraph (at least several sentences) explaining what it does and evaluating it (discussing its strengths and weaknesses). Do not select one that someone else has already written about. Include a second paragraph describing how you went about finding the reference work you evaluated.
In your second and third messages (responses to classmates), after exploring the reference works they selected and evaluated, add to their evaluations.

Comment

Select one of your classmates' blogs from my Bloglines account and post a comment in response to one of his or her entries. (Please do not post in a classmate's blog where you've commented previously, and try to select someone who hasn't had a comment yet this week.) If you post anonymously (without logging in to Blogger or WordPress), please include at least your first name at the end of your comment. Also, please make sure that your comment is positive and substantive.
